On the road

SituationWhat to do
Crash or serious incident000 first, then the office. Make it safe, first aid, keep passengers together and supervised, preserve the scene. See section 16 of the Driver Handbook.
Breakdown or bus unusableMake the bus and passengers safe. Ring the office for the spare vehicle. Follow EPG 1. Complete a defect report.
Vehicle fireStop, ignition off, everyone out and well away, upwind. Ring 000. Use the extinguisher only on a small fire, with a clear way out.
Bush fireFollow EPG 4. Do not drive into smoke you cannot see through. Ring the office for a safe route.
FloodwaterNever drive into it. Watch flood markers, stay on the approved route and tell the office where you are. If caught, call for help straight away. If the vehicle stalls, get everyone out to higher ground. Do not walk in water knee deep or higher. Stay away from fallen powerlines.
Running late or service disruptedRing the office so schools and parents can be told. In communities, go through the community office or agreed contact.
Driver unable to workTell the office as early as you can so a relief driver can be arranged. Planned leave needs 5 working days’ notice.

Every bus carries its Emergency Plan and the EPGs for its area: EPG 1 vehicle breakdown, EPG 2 student medical emergency, EPG 4 bush fire. Read them before your first run.

Fitzroy Crossing depot and site office, Bell Street

Fire

  • Shout “FIRE, FIRE, FIRE” (or use the alarm if there is one) and ring 000.
  • Only fight a fire if 000 has been called, it is small and not spreading, you have a clear way out behind you, and you know how to use the extinguisher.
  • Leave by the nearest exit and go to an assembly point. Stay there until you are told it is safe.

Other emergencies

  • Flood at the depot: be ready to evacuate when told. Outdoors, get to high ground and stay there.
  • Bomb threat by phone: stay calm, do not hang up, keep them talking. Write down exactly what they say, and anything about their voice and background noise. Then ring 000 (Police) and tell the Site Manager.
  • Other emergencies to report straight away: severe weather, extended power loss, any threat to people on site.
